Obsessed with storytelling from an early age, Ben de Leeuw’s first works were comic strips starring anthropomorphic lizards. Soon the animation bug bit, and they were jumping up and down in the margins of books. In high school a super 8 camera was introduced, first for animation, then for filmmaking.
Ben pursued his storytelling Jones in college, and received his BA in drama and film. Later he trained in the brand new field of CGI.
Since the early 90s, Ben has spread his time amongst a number of pursuits. He has done groundbreaking work in web based and real-time animation; won awards as a writer, and as a filmmaker; taught at SFSU, sat on panels at SFMOMA and Siggraph, and lectured as far abroad as Mumbai, India. In 2006 he mounted a show of panoramic photo collage from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
In 2008 Ben moved from San Francisco to Asheville North Carolina, in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. He shares a cottage with an orange tabby named Emperor Norton and a white greyhound named Sita.
